Digital Unit Plan Site: The Basics of Unit Planning
The following steps should be completed in order:
Choose a topic for your unit plan. This should be a topic that is aligned with your content standards and that you might be able to use during your teaching/student teaching. Choose a topic you enjoy, and one that may be enhanced through the use of technology.
Create your Unit Plan Site. Create a Unit Plan site separate from your Teacher Site. Choose a name for your unit site that is appropriate for a teacher. It might include your name, subject area, or a special science term. Examples include CostaScientificMethod or ScienceImmunology. Add your Instructor as an Editor to your site. Click on More Actions and then Site Permissions to do this. Enter your instructor's email address and choose the can edit option.
Download the Unit Plan Template and save to your desktop in a folder called EDSC 304 (or whatever you wish).
Add the following items on your home/main page. Note that these items are also part of the Intel Essentials Unit Plan Template. We recommend that you draft your content in the template Word document and then cut and paste. This way you will have a saved version of your unit plan that you can work on when you are offline.
Unit Title
Unit Summary
Subject Area
Grade Level
Targeted Content Standards
Student Objectives; Essential, Unit and Content Questions (you will complete this during Intel Module 2)
Create a link on your Unit Plan site to your Teacher Site, and create a link on your Teacher site to your Unit Plan site.
Create the following (blank) additional pages and link them on your navigation (Note: you only have to create the Site pages, not the assignments themselves. You will complete each of these lessons over the rest of the semester): Assessments; Lesson 1: Teacher Lecture; Lesson 2: Multimedia Project; Lesson 3: Webercise; Lesson 4: Timeline; Resources
Create a plan for storing additional resources(Resources page). Again, there are multiple options for this:
Create a new page for your unit, using the file cabinet or regular page formats on Google Sites.
Create a new folder in your PortaPortal, Google Bookmarks, or other bookmarking site. This could be linked from the navigation sidebar or within the unit or on its own page.
Locate and link at least 10 student resources related to the unit content. This could include videos, digital interactives, tutoring resources, simulations, or just content-based links. Note that these resources must be UNIT specific (unlike the resources you post on your Teacher Site).
Important Note: Although we will be creating "lessons," we will be focusing our attention on the use of technology to support student learning. Thus, you are not required to adhere to the Department of Secondary Education lesson plan format. You are welcome to do so, and doing so will make it easier to incorporate these lessons into your student teaching. You can find the lesson plan format, the side guide, and a presentation on the format in the Single Subject Handbook (scroll to the bottom of this link to find the Lesson Plan forms).
